Tracking Amazon's Gold Rush, July 2021

July ended with a wide range of news about illegal mining in the Amazon. An increase of dredges has been spotted in the Nanay River, in Peru, as well as an increase of social issues brought on by this activity. In Colombia, the latest United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report on alluvial gold mining mentioned the increase in illegal gold mining within rivers in 2020. / El mes de julio ha terminado con una gran diversidad de noticias sobre la minería ilegal en la Amazonia. Se ha detectado un aumento de dragas en el río Nanay, en Perú, así como un incremento de los problemas sociales provocados por esta actividad. En Colombia, el último informe de la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas contra las Drogas y el Delito menciona el aumento de la minería ilegal de oro dentro de los ríos durante el 2020. 

A report highlighting violence against indigenous women near the Cenepa river in Peru has emerged, an area where illegal mining is taking place. Exposure to mercury in indigenous communities in the region is ongoing as revealed by two new studies. / En Perú, un informe destaca la violencia contra las mujeres indígenas en las cercanías del río Cenepa, una zona donde se practica la minería ilegal. La contaminación por mercurio en las comunidades indígenas de la región continúa, según revelan dos nuevos estudios.

Lastly, Repórter Brasil released a series of reports about what happens with the gold that has been illegally extracted from Yanomami’s land, including details on where it is sold, and how it might reach big jewelry companies. Also, gold from Madre de Dios seems to still be reaching buyers in the US via India. / Por último, Repórter Brasil publicó una serie de informes sobre lo que ocurre con el oro extraído ilegalmente de las tierras de los Yanomami, incluyendo detalles sobre dónde se vende y cómo puede llega a grandes empresas de joyería. Además, parece que el oro de Madre de Dios continúa llegando a los compradores de Estados Unidos a través de la India.

Illegal Mining

  • Defensoría pidió a Congreso no aprobar ley que legaliza las dragas en minería artesanal

“A través de sus redes sociales, la Defensoría del Pueblo exhortó al Pleno del Congreso no aprobar el dictamen que pretende dictar nuevas medidas para la pequeña minería y minería artesanal, entre ellas el retorno de las dragas que fueron prohibidas en el 2012 por generar un impacto grave en los ríos, especialmente de la Amazonía.”

“El pasado 30 de junio, el Pleno del Congreso aprobó los proyectos de ley 5706 y 5881, que proponen ampliar una vez más el plazo para la inscripción en el Registro Integral de Formalización Minera (REINFO) y la presentación del Instrumento de Gestión Ambiental para la Formalización de Actividades de Pequeña Minería y Minería Artesanal (IGAFOM), respectivamente.”
