Tracking Amazon's Gold Rush

In Brazil and Peru leaders of indigenous groups have taken a stand to defend their land against illegal mining activities, reporting death threats and the lack of support from their governments. Indeed, in the case of Brazil regulators seem to be no match to the gold rush in the country, and in Peru even if some interdictions continue in Madre de Dios, threats are ongoing in the northern region of Amazonas. / En Brasil y Perú, líderes indígenas buscan defender sus tierras contra las actividades mineras ilegales, denunciando amenazas de muerte y la falta de apoyo de los gobiernos. En el caso de Brasil los reguladores parecen no estar a la altura de la fiebre del oro en el país, y en Perú, aunque continúan algunas interdicciones en Madre de Dios, las amenazas son continuas en la región de Amazonas.

On an international scale, Metalor, one of the biggest Swiss gold refineries, has developed a procedure to quickly confirm where gold had been mined. Nevertheless, the procedure doesn’t seem to trace the origin of recycled gold or gold held in banks and “only about 32% of all the gold imported by the five Swiss refiners in 2018 came directly from mines”. In other news, NGOs criticized the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) responsible sourcing program as it “has failed to ensure that only responsibly-sourced gold, conflict-free and untainted by human rights abuses is traded worldwide”. / A escala internacional, Metalor, una de las más grandes refinerías de oro suizas, ha desarrollado un procedimiento para confirmar rápidamente dónde se ha extraído el oro. Sin embargo, el procedimiento no parece rastrear el origen del oro reciclado o del oro guardado en los bancos y "sólo alrededor del 32% de todo el oro importado por las cinco refinerías suizas en 2018 procedía directamente de las minas". En otras noticias, ONGs criticaron al programa de abastecimiento responsable del London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) que "ha fracasado en garantizar que solo se comercialice en todo el mundo oro de origen responsable, libre de conflictos y no contaminado por abusos a derechos humanos".
